AI Reality Check: Harnessing Potential, Avoiding Sci-Fi Nightmares

 November 6, 2023

By  Joe Habscheid

Summary: Today’s world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is more real than reel, but lessons from science fiction persist. The AI’s helping hand, as seen in Star Trek, is exciting, but the specter of unchecked AI dominance, as in The Terminator, is a cause for concern. Together these narratives bring to the fore the dual nature of AI: potential and threat. As AI penetrates every facet of society, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Close on heels comes President Biden’s executive order on AI, a significant step towards fostering AI capability without compromising safety and ethics.

The Lessons from Science Fiction

From on-screen AI assistance in Star Trek to a rogue AI in 2001: A Space Odyssey, science fiction offers profound insights into a world increasingly reliant on AI. These varying portrayals highlight co-existing optimism and pessimism about AI, a reflection of reality even in the most rural of towns in Mid-Michigan. Recognizing this duality of AI presence, we ask – how do we ensure the right balance?

President Biden’s Executive Order – A Response Rooted in Screen and Reality

This week’s backdrop featured President Joe Biden’s executive order on AI. This directive intends to enlist leading AI talents for government services and lay down guidelines to prevent AI from becoming a national security threat. Movie-inspired or not, the narrative of rogue AI presented in films such as The Terminator resonates in real-world AI policy discussions. AI development speed, when unchecked, carries the risk of creating systems that might escape human control. The urgency is real and all too familiar to those who’ve witnessed AI-invoked panics on the silver screen.

Today’s AI – A Mix of Pixar’s Wall-E and The Terminator

Current AI focus isn’t limited to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Even AI systems like ChatGPT could pose significant challenges if not cautiously deployed and regulated. Cautious anticipation, rather than unbridled excitement, seems to be OpenAI’s take. Harnessing the potential of AI will only be effective when paired with an equal emphasis on safety—an approach rooted in European liberal values, supporting progress and welfare hand in hand.

Global Recognition – Embracing the Lessons of Fiction

The AI Safety Summit and the pact signed by 28 countries mirror our global awareness of AI’s potential dangers. Vice President Kamala Harris has highlighted issues such as disinformation and deepfakes, underscoring the use of AI in ways unintended or unauthorized. These events show that thoughtful regulation and thorough safety measures are imperative for beneficial AI integration. Fiction offers cautionary tales, but real-world action is key to averting dystopian outcomes.

The lessons of fiction aren’t for entertainment alone, but contemplation and action. As doctors, lawyers, and consultants serving our communities, we cannot ignore the transformative impact and potential risks of AI, even in our towns in Mid-Michigan. Ultimately, we need to step into this AI-steeped future not with fear but understanding, regulation, and ethics.
