AI Chatbots and School Law: A Controversial Junction in Iowa

 August 25, 2023

By  Joe Habscheid

Summary: In Iowa, a new educational law governing literature in schools has incited controversy and confusion. At the center of this debate, surprisingly, is an AI chatbot, used by a school district to interpret and apply this law. Today, we’ll unpack the importance of clarity and nuance in the law, the capabilities and limitations of AI, and the challenges that arise when they intersect.

AI: An Unlikely Interpreter of Law

AI chatbot technology, as represented by ChatGPT, offers powerful capabilities but it’s not infallible. Its primary limitation? The comprehension of nuance and understanding of cultural discourse, especially regarding sensitive topics such as age-appropriate sexual content in educational literature. Does this raise the question: Are we expecting too much from our artificial intuitions?

The Implications for Schools

In their quest to operate within the confines of the law, schools like those in the Mason City Community School District find themselves in a predicament. Using AI technology to interpret the law within a strict time-frame, while ensuring as many books as possible remain accessible has led to heated debates. Are we navigating a law that lacks clarity, or are we missing a signal indicating a much needed discussion about the place of such technologies in our schools?

The Need for Clarity and Guidance

As echoed by Bridgette Exman, the district’s assistant superintendent, the lack of guidance provided to educators is a prevailing issue. As professionals at the crossroads of education, technology and law, is it not our role to bring clarity to such critical conversations? Can we not devise solutions that foster compliance without compromising the quality of education?

Coming to a salient perspective requires that we empathize with educators like Exman, who find themselves caught in a somewhat Kafkaesque predicament—trying to navigate a law that seems subjective at best and a technology that does not fully grasp the nuances of human reasoning at worst.

The conversation doesn’t need to end with the mere acknowledgement of these concerns. Like professionals in any field, we must leverage these challenges as opportunities—opportunities to meaningfully evaluate our laws and our technologies.

Paving the Way Forward

As consultants, doctors, and lawyers focused on contributing to our society in Mid-Michigan, as well as the world at large, let’s transform this conversation. Let’s do more than identify the limitations of AI chatbots or point at the vagueness of a law. Let’s share ideas about how we can facilitate comprehensive discourses, build truly representative rules, and prepare for a future where AI increasingly intersects with human institutions. And most importantly, let’s ensure that no matter what, the education of our youth stands uncompromised.
